Six String Synopsis:

American business entrepreneur and innovator, Hartley Peavey (1941-) started out by building guitar amplifiers in his parents’ basement as a teenager in the 1950s. Allegedly, he started doing this because his father would not buy him an amp. He went on constructing amplifiers for friends in exchange for guitar lessons. With an $8,000 loan from his father after graduating from Mississippi State University, Hartley Peavey founded Peavey Electronics in 1965, based in Meridian, Mississippi. The business initially focused on manufacturing guitar amps. While making amps at many price points, perhaps the most famous product is the high gain Peavey 5150 amp, created in collaboration with guitarist Eddie Van Halen and popular with artists like Jerry Cantrell of rock band Alice In Chains.

Having built up a substantial business, Peavey started investigating manufacture of electric guitars in 1975, starting with the T‑60 guitar and T‑40 bass manufactured from 1978-1988. Engineer and guitar repairer, Chip Todd was hired to establish the Peavey Guitar Program, design the first instruments, established production processes, hire and train employees, and set up dealer relations. Todd was instrumental in many of the innovations introduced by Peavey before leaving to join Fender in 1981. Peavey guitars were the first to be built using CNC machines for mass production of bodies and necks. Peavey has since produced many different guitar, bass and acoustic guitar models.

Peavey Electronics is still privately owned with Hartley Peavey as CEO. His company is now one of the largest audio equipment manufacturers in the world including more than 30 facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. While still mainly associated with guitar amps, Peavey also makes keyboards, drums and professional audio equipment, including brands such as Budda Amplification, Crest Audio and Trace Elliot.
